Behaviour of Reinforced Concrete Flat Slabs

Summary

REGAN, P. E.
Behaviour of reinforced concrete flat slabs Construction Industry Research and Information Association Report 89
The design of reinforced concrete flat slabs is studied with regard to flexure, punching shear, and deflection. The basis of the project was a comprehensive experimental programme of slab tests to failure. Design expre sions are developed to take account of the equivalent beam behaviour of the slab, and the reduction in effective slab width close to exterior columns. Detailing procedures are presented which reflect the distribution of slab moments and torsion local to the columns. Additional aspects considered include use of shear reinforcement, avoidance of progressive collapse, and design of waffle and drop head slabs.
